Climate action and responsible resource use

Taking action where it matters

Environmental considerations play an important role throughout the lifecycle of our products and services, from development and production to use and after-sales services.

We continuously work to develop products and services with features that can help to manage energy use, water use, food preservation and durability. Transparent product information helps consumers make choices based on their individual needs.

Reducing our footprint

Decorative image - solar panels on a roof top

We regularly assess environmental aspects across our value chain. That includes both improving the material mix of our products and reducing emissions and energy consumption.

Whether it’s sourcing or manufacturing, product use or returns, refurbishment, recycling, or the reuse of our appliances, we review every aspect of our product lifecycles in terms of their environmental impact and identify opportunities for improvement in support of our climate-related objectives.

Details of the measures and milestones supporting our targets are available in our implementation plan.

Product innovations

We continuously develop product features designed to help consumers use resources more efficiently, for example by reducing water, energy, detergent consumption, or food waste. By doing so, we support them to lower their household costs while reducing resource consumption at home. At the same time, we are increasing the use of recycled materials in selected products and advancing more modular product designs. Some appliances already reflect these developments today.

One example is the Bosch Green Collection. When developing this product line, we placed particular emphasis on the use of materials with a lower carbon footprint and on reducing emissions associated with production materials.

The Bosch Green Collection fridge freezer uses CO₂-reduced steel, aluminium, bio-based foam and plastics. Therefore, the production materials have a 50 % smaller CO₂ footprint [1] compared to standard models. In addition, it is rated in the highest energy efficiency class A and therefore features low energy consumption during use.

With our Green Collection oven, manufactured in Germany, consumers can choose a product with a lower carbon footprint. Thanks to the use of CO₂-reduced steel and aluminium, the appliance has a 20 % lower CO₂ footprint [2] compared to standard models. It also has low energy consumption, thanks to its energy efficiency class A+. The aluminium of the dark inox handle consists of over 85 % recycled material that has been collected and recycled after use. Compared to aluminium out of a standard process the dark inox handle contributes to the product's reduced CO₂ footprint.

In production, the CO₂ reduced material is partly mixed with conventional material, but is allocated to the Bosch Green Collection fridge-freezers by calculation through mass balancing according to ISO 22095-2. This means that a mass balanced product may, in purely physical terms, contain less or even no CO₂-reduced materials. Verified and confirmed by TÜV Rheinland.

Mass balancing as a pathway to lower-emission value chains

By 2030, we aim to reduce our absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 20% compared to 2018 (read more about the measures and milestones in our implementation plan). Indirect emissions result from the electricity consumption of our products during use, or from the materials we use for production, among other things. In addition to steadily decreasing energy consumption of our home appliances, the mass balance approach is an important lever for achieving our emissions reduction target.

The mass balance approach attributes lower-emission materials to specific products, even if these materials are mixed with conventional raw materials during production. This is an important intermediate step for us in reducing the carbon footprint of selected products today, before lower-emission materials become more widely available.

We use the mass balance approach for CO₂-reduced appliances in the Bosch Green Collection. Our Bosch Green Collection fridge-freezers have a 50 percent [1] smaller carbon footprint than comparable conventional products. These savings are achieved in part by using bio-circular raw materials in production. Biocircular raw materials are recycled- or waste-materials such as used cooking fat. Special recycling processes can be used to produce the basic building blocks of plastics from these materials. This reduces the use of raw fossil materials and avoids competing with food and feed production. In steel and aluminium production, biogas and renewable energies are increasingly being used to reduce CO₂ emissions. This makes it possible, for the refrigerators in the Bosch Green Collection, to reduce CO₂ emissions from the metals we use by up to 70 percent [2] and from the plastics we process between 60 to 130 percent [3].

We also use the mass balance approach for Bosch Green Collection ovens. Through the use of CO₂-reduced steel and aluminium allocated via mass balancing, these appliances have a 20 percent lower carbon footprint [4] compared to comparable conventional models. In addition, the aluminium used for the dark inox handle consists of more than 85 percent recycled material, contributing to the product's reduced CO₂ footprint.

CO₂-reduced materials are not yet produced on a large scale but are mixed with conventional materials by manufacturers during production. This allows our suppliers to gradually convert their production from conventional materials to materials produced with a lower carbon footprint. This is where the mass balance approach comes in: It documents and certifies the production of these materials with reduced CO₂ emissions and specifically assigns the positive contribution to CO₂ reduction to the products of the Bosch Green Collection. The CO₂-reduced material is no different in quality from conventional material. Consumers who buy a home appliance from the Bosch Green Collection help support demand for materials produced with a lower carbon footprint.

The mass balance approach has been used successfully in the electricity market for years, as it ensures that the amount of electricity from renewable sources generated corresponds to the amount of electricity from renewable sources sold. We consider it a useful interim step in supporting the transition from fossil-based to renewable energy sources and raw materials in established value chains.

[3] CO₂ reduction in plastics by offsetting stored CO₂ emissions from bio-based raw materials (e.g. vegetable fats). Depending on the type of plastic, 50-100% of the basic building blocks (polymers) can be produced from bio-based raw materials. If the bio-content is high, more CO₂ is stored in the plant-based raw material than is produced during production, so that a CO₂ reduction of more than 100% is possible.

Responsible production

We are certifiably commited to improving environmental and energy management across our production network. Because every single one of BSH’s 37 factories is ISO 14001 certified (International Organisation for Standardization). Beyond that, we have also secured certifications in compliance with the ISO 50001 standard for energy management for all of our production sites in the EU, in Türkiye and in China.

Each production facility and team have the support of a dedicated environmental protection officer and occupational health and safety expert, who report to the Environmental Protection and Health and Safety department at group headquarters. In turn, the department draws up guidelines and conducts internal audits to monitor compliance and keep everyone safe.

Even during the product design phase, we consider material selection and seek to avoid substances of concern where appropriate. We also work to increase the use of recycled materials and evaluate alternative materials based on relevant environmental considerations and product requirements.

In 2022, BSH completed the transition to refrigerants that do not contain fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) in its self-manufactured refrigeration appliances. In its self-manufactured heat pump dryers, BSH started introducing F-gas-free refrigerants in 2015 and completed the transition across all product lines in 2023. As a result, these product groups already met the requirements of the EU ban on F-gases before it came into effect on the 1st January 2026.
